Scarecrow

October 31, 2019

Scarecrow

Diandra Holmes

Nestled between pine tree
branches, a ribcage picked clean.

So weathered, it’s wooden.
Beetles bore into its pores.

Some enterprising blue jay
has made its home beneath the sternum.

Snippets of grass,
cornstalk, and twine woven together.

And four beaks gape open,

the writhing, hungry heart.
